Blendly Hopes to Becomes the First Coffee Company in the World to Establish a New Digital Academy Training Coffee Baristas of the Future

We’ve applied to the Government’s KickStart Scheme to use our existing online platform which taps into a vibrant COVID19-proof food & drink infrastructure!

We’re hoping to become the first online coffee business in the world to offer a digital training environment to Coffee Baristas who have lost their jobs in the ongoing covid19 pandemic.

Under the Government’s KickStart Programme we hope to train and employ up to thirty Baristas, over a six month period, to become Blendly Distributors, learning more about the vibrant new digital food and drink infrastructure, in which coffee, as a valued commodity, is a major player. These Baristas will be chosen from candidates throughout the UK.

Our map showing the distributor areas in the UK

We’ve recently secured a five figure Scottish Government funded Digital Development Loan from DSL, a Glasgow based Responsible Finance Provider, to be invested in Sensor Technology & Predictive Ordering. This is an important step for us, meaning we are now perfectly placed to facilitate and run a digital training school. It will give the unemployed an opportunity to convert, upgrade, and develop new skills!

Our successful Barista Distributor platform provides the opportunity to manage and grow a coffee business. It can be done entirely from home, making it ideal for the current Covid19 inflicted world.

Blendly is growing into new markets, with new digital technology playing a huge part. We look forward to helping those in the hospitality sector gain new employment, and knowledge, which will see them running their own coffee businesses. We need to focus on a more positive future.

Helping Baristas to add greater value to customers is at the heart of Blendly. They can enjoy an extended choice of distribution, product flavours, and tastes that they can then access and pass to customers. Our existing Baristas manage a network of coffee drinkers. Their businesses grow based on their own expertise, commitment, and knowledge of the coffee industry. We all must now engage with the modern digital economy.

All parts of the UK are available for Baristas to take as territoryostas

Under the KickStart training, those taking part will be paid for twenty five hours of work per week. Topics covered will include sales, account management, IT, and marketing, with our new employees given ample time to find roles which fit with their skills and experience. At the end of the training they will achieve an Accredited Company Certification in recognition of their skills, which also provides access to ongoing skill development and opportunities.

Our new Barista Graduates will have the option to stay with Blendly as part of our inhouse team, or as a Barista Distributor. Or they can make their own way into the business world, equipped with the skills needed to succeed in a modern digital economy. We’re waiting to hear over the next four weeks when this can start – keep you posted!

Gordon Brings New Zealand Coffee Culture to the Beautiful Scottish Borders

Gordon Smith was keen to bring the vibrant Kiwi Coffee Culture he had experienced for the last 38 years to his new cafe venture in the Scottish Borders, and decided that Blendly was the perfect coffee partner to work with to achieve his goals.

Having returned to Scotland 2 years ago, after his many years in New Zealand, Gordon, known locally as Gordon the Grocer, set up his cafe which is part of the Melrose Cricket Club in the grounds of Borders General Hospital.

Having found Blendly online, he asked company founder Mark Wilson and his team to create what he called a “no bitterness” coffee, as he felt that many UK coffee blends were too bitter for his liking.

Gordon also bakes delicious pies

The resultant blend, called May All Your Balls Be Yonkers, is now an extremely popular blend, not just in Gordon’s cafe, but with Blendly’s online customers who can buy blends created by others to enjoy at home.

“My customers sing the praises of this lovely blend,” said Gordon. “They say it’s one of the best coffees they have ever tasted, so that is praise indeed, and shows you that Mark and his team really knew what they were doing when they created this exclusively for me.”

“I’m starting to get a coffee culture here in my cafe, which is exactly what I wanted , I’m really pleased.”

Gordon added that he had tried to create a cafe which offered customers a real quality experience, from the coffee, to the food, to the ambiance.

“We are near the hospital so many people pop in who have been visiting and are looking for a calm oasis – it’s very peaceful and quiet here.”

“I want to continue to work with Blendly to refine my blend even more,” said Gordon. “I also want to continue to grow my customer base locally.”

“Blendy certainly takes you on the very best coffee journey,” finished Gordon. “I’m happy to recommend Blendly to any other cafe owners who want to create something really special to make your cafe stand out from the crowd!”

Coffee is certainly up there as one of Gordon’s main passions, but the other is sport, namely rugby and cricket. He currently coaches players at Melrose Rugby Club and is involved in the development of cricket in the Borders, by working with Melrose Cricket Club.

Gordon is also a cricket and rugby coach

A very busy man! We wish him well from us all at Blendly!

Voted one of Dundee top five restaurants, and a leading player in hospitality along Shore Terrace, with the V&A just over the road, Brasserie Ecosse has worked with Blendly since it opened two years ago. The building in which Brasserie Ecosse is housed is rich in history, with one notable fact being it was the location for the founding of Dundee Utd in 1909, when the team was first known as Dundee Hibernian.

Now it’s a sleek and stylish brasserie with an urban vibe, boasting a champagne tasting area, eclectic contemporary furniture, eye catching metal curtains, and a feature wall of moss and succulents.

Of Greek Heritage but originally from Chicago, Nikos has worked in New York, and at some of Scotland’s top hotels such as Gleneagles and Malmaison. He brings a wealth of experience, together with global food & drink influences to his role at Brasserie Ecosse. He is responsible for two fantastic coffee blends which he has developed with Blendly, a Brasserie Ecosse Artisan Blend and the Iwoca Crema blend. Customers can purchase these delicious coffees by scanning a QR code in the restaurant.

We’re proud of our range of unique artisan coffees, created with Blendly’s easy to use online tools which enable you to choose the beans, and the level of roast for each coffee blend – said Nikos.

“We also enjoy cost savings, and other benefits by being a Blendly customer,” he added. “They certainly understand the hospitality sector, and what we need in a coffee supplier.”

Nikos went on to say that he believed having your own coffee blends certainly made any business stand out from the crowd, especially with customers being able to quickly and easily buy the blends to enjoy at home, by scanning the QR codes.

We have had very positive feedback on the coffee from our patrons

“We have had very positive feedback on the coffee from our patrons,” he said. “We certainly used our imagination to create delicious hot and cold coffee drinks.  I created my very own logo which is etched onto the cappuccinos in chocolate – it’s a mix of a traditional Greek symbol, with  a traditional Scottish one – it’s very much become out trademark branding,” said Nikos.

“We have it on our water bottles too.”

“We’re all about an elevated experience here at Brasserie Ecosse, which is on a par with any five star hotel.”

“Blendly is a five star partner,” finished Nikos, “and whatever plans we now make for 2021 as we start to come out of the covid19 crisis, Blendly will be at the very heart of them. Our brasserie is a truly amazing space, in which we hope to hold events, tastings, and special promotions again as soon as we can.”

Mike’s Custom Blends Mix Great Coffee with Cakes in a Busy High Street Setting

A move from the leisure industry into running a coffee shop has been a good one for Mike Lowe, especially when he discovered Blendly.

Having previously run Bingo Halls and pubs, Mike acquired the former MacDonalds in Kirkcaldy High Street five years ago, and set up Cupcake Coffee Box.

A year into the business, he met Blendly founder Mark Wilson who set him on the path with commercial roaster and blender, Blendly, enabling him to create his own custom blends of coffee based on Italian blends similar to that used by Lavazza, one of his favourite brands.

Mike now has several blends, including the Cupcake Coffee Box Artisan Blend, the Bad Boy Blend and BlackNBrewed. All these blends are now sold on the Blendly website as an additional stream of income for Mike as the creator. His customers at Cupcake Coffee Box can order the coffee through Blendly, or direct in the coffee shop by scanning QR codes.

Mike sells his blends to a number of friends along with two other franchisees.
Plans are afoot for him to launch another blend which he is going to call “Three Beans Coffee Co”. Another Italian blend, it will mix Columbian beans with Indian Cherry and Ugandan Robusta, but with some subtle variations.

So far, COVID-19 has prevented him from opening his new outlet at Kirkcaldy Train Station, which will offer Three Beans, and he has another cafe in the pipeline too.

I’d recommend Blendy to any coffee shop owners. The platform is engaging, easy to use, and once you take up a Barista Plan there are numerous financial and community benefits to enjoy.

He’s also launching a Coffee Concierge Service which will see him set up a coffee service for other businesses, providing the coffee, and sourcing & training the staff.

“Blendly has opened up a new world of coffee opportunities for me,” said Mike. “My customers love my blends, and I am hopeful that as soon as we can recover from the ravages of COVID-19, I can be successful with my new ventures, and go on to launch yet more blends.”

“Blendly has given me the coffee knowledge, access to fantastic quality beans, and the tools to create what is in effect a separate business for myself.”

Adrian’s Tutored Coffee Taste Buds Find Blendly to Their Liking

Adrian Sensenet could certainly be described as having very tutored taste buds when it comes to coffee.

Running an Information Security Business, and two Events Companies in London and Singapore, he is a very busy entrepreneur with a long term background in coffee.

For a number of years he was a Taster for one of London’s best ranked coffee shops and advised friends on equipment and bean choice.

I found Blendly online and liked the fact that I could access seasonal beans. I’m always looking for consistency of supply, and ease of delivery, both of which Blendly covers effortlessly.

Now due to COVID-19, he tests and develops more taste combinations at home and sells coffee blends to friends and family, who trust his impeccable taste and judgement over what beans to select.

“I found Blendly online and liked the fact that I could access seasonal beans,” said Adrian. “I’m always looking for consistency of supply, and ease of delivery, both of which Blendly covers effortlessly.”

“I am now a regular customer with Blendly, choosing them over several other roasters whom I used to buy from. I found that some of them had changed their blends and they were no longer to my taste, and I didn’t like them as much.”

“The recent lockdown saw me keep a number of more vulnerable friends, who were shielding, supplied with Blendly coffee,” he said.  “I can see this continuing for a little while as these people are not keen to return to mainstream shops anytime soon, and like the fact they are getting a premium, artisan coffee blend, supplied to me via myself. The products I am selling are based on my many years of expertise in coffee.”

“I would happily recommend Blendly to other coffee connoisseurs, whether for business, or pleasure, as it’s a reliable company building a solid track record.”

The Boathouse Glencaple Case Study

Denyse Boyle has been working with Blendly for ten months and was delighted to find a Scottish based artisan coffee roaster & blender to supply the coffee at her popular café and shop, which she runs at Glencaple in Dumfries & Galloway.

A huge coffee fan, as well as something of an ambassador for it, Denyse spent a total of fifteen years working for one of the nation’s favourite coffee brands, fulfilling the roles of both store manager, and brand excellence coach – so you could say she knows her coffee beans!

The price point is very attractive too

She developed her blend with us – 80% Brazilian Santos Bean and 20% Guatemala Hue Hue bean – based on her own personal preferences, but was confident that her customers would love it too. Listing Blendly’s efficiency as the biggest benefit to using us, she is delighted that the coffee is roasted for her by Blendly, and delivered to her so fresh!

“The price point is very attractive too,” says Denyse. “I’m the only venue that provides this delicious blend, made into fabulous hot drinks for my customers to enjoy.”

“It’s a real talking point for my customers whom I have told all about Blendly, and how we worked together to create the blend,” she added.

“I definitely feel special having my own bespoke blend for the cafe. If you take pride in your business, and want to share and promote the provenance and sustainability of the ingredients you use, then why wouldn’t you extend this to your coffee? It’s one of our biggest volume products.”

They are a fully digital, one stop shop where I feel valued as a customer. I would encourage any coffee shop to check them out and see how they can help them build coffee sales.

A next step for Denyse may be to start selling her unique blend to others, as she builds on this aspect of what is in effect, a separate coffee business within her business, something which Blendly help with every step of the way.

“Blendly have thought of everything,” finished Denyse. “They are a fully digital, one stop shop where I feel valued as a customer. I would encourage any coffee shop to check them out and see how they can help them build coffee sales.”

A Bespoke Coffee Experience for The Red House Hotel’s 40th Anniversary

The Red House Hotel – 40 years running a busy hotel for the whole community in Coupar Angus – now with its own Bespoke Coffee Experience with Blendly!

The Red House Hotel, the last Hotel in Coupar Angus, is the home of fresh bespoke coffee!  The Hotel now has its own Beer Garden, open every day, and serving teas, coffees & lunches, as well as alcoholic drinks.

Outdoor Beer Garden has become a popular coffee hub to enjoy a blether and check up on friends we may have not seen recently

Currently celebrating 40 years of ownership by the Bannerman family, 2020 is a special year for the Hotel. Dating back to Victorian times, when Coupar Angus had a vibrant railway station, the building was originally called The Railway Hotel. When the trains ceased to run, the neighbouring potato store and railway yard was purchased by current owner Alan Bannerman’s father Norman, and his Uncle Telford, from then owners, Scottish Brewers, in 1979, with the two men calling their business partnership, Nortel Leisure. Redeveloping the building back into a Hotel, which they called The Red House Hotel, the business opened its doors to guests in 1980.

“Developing our own delicious coffee blend with Blendly, is just one of the new initiatives we have introduced to celebrate our forty years of ownership,” said Alan.

As a brand it was important for us to create something unique that matches our brand values for quality and independence.

“It’s also in response to customer demand, as everyone wants great coffee at any time of the day, and we were finding that artisan coffee was becoming more and more popular.”

“As a brand it was important for us to create something unique that matches our brand values for quality and independence. We’re not a big chain hotel – we are family run, one of the  biggest employers in the town, and we promote community.”

The Red House Hotel blend, also available at the Hotel’s sister business, The Dalmore Inn, Blairgowrie, is a Dark Italian Espresso, featuring a third Brazilian Santos Beans, a third Colombian Excelso Beans, and a third Ugandan Robusta Beans. The grind is Whole Bean, whilst the Roast is Dark Italian. Customers can order this very same coffee to enjoy at home by scanning the QR code which is displayed in each venue. The coffee will then be delivered to their homes within three working days, to bring a taste of their favourite local establishments to their home!

With Quality food and service at the top of  The Red House Hotel’s agenda, they understand that more and more top establishments, hotels and restaurants have increased sales of the hot drink three times faster than specialist outlets, by creating coffee blends that are unique to them and their customer.

    • According to Mintel Coffee drinking is ingrained among Brits as, today, a coffee-loving four in five (79%) adults drink coffee at home.
    • Drunk by 62% of adults, instant coffee is the nation’s number one in-home coffee brew, followed by ground coffee (24%) and coffee pods (15%).
    • Keeping up appearances, as many as one in five (20%) coffee-drinking Brits say they would be embarrassed to serve instant coffee to their guests. But it is the nation’s young (aged 16-34) who are Britain’s top coffee snobs, 31% of whom would be embarrassed to serve a cup of instant coffee.

“Our Beer Garden has also become a great spot to gather, drink our coffee blend, and chat in small bubble groups – our customers can come into the hotel. Coffee and a chat has become so important post covid as we all reconnect, so let’s do it over the freshest, most delicious coffee we can offer,” added Alan Bannerman.

We love to use seasonal ingredients, and ingredients that mean something to us, so a dessert with our own coffee, maybe a pannacotta, or a coffee souffle, is bound to be popular with the many foodies we attract.

Head Chef at the Hotel, Nigel Liston, is excited about working with Blendly, and has plans to develop a dessert containing the Hotel’s blend.

“This is quality coffee containing speciality coffee beans harvested around the world,” he said. “We love to use seasonal ingredients, and ingredients that mean something to us, so a dessert with our own coffee, maybe a pannacotta, or a coffee souffle, is bound to be popular with the many foodies we attract.”

As palates change, Blendly, the commercial coffee roaster, understands that many more people are looking for increased choice in quality food and drink. Blendly allows its customers to create their own coffee experience, delivered fresh.

Allowing them to explore the flavours of different beans and roasts is part of the Blendly coffee experience!

Blendly Supporting the Third Sector

According to Tim Brown of the University of Chester, the UK charity sector could possibly loose up to £5bn in funding as a result of COVID191.  Cancelled events such as London Marathon, Fundraising dinners, canvassing…most, if not all, gone…

Here at Blendly, we’re doing our part to take a positive role in changing this situation by partnering with charities and organisations to develop blends and generate a sustainable, permanent income by using our Barista Distributor Community Builder.

The Blendly Barista Distributor Community Builder accounts were designed to be used by approved Barista Distributors allowing them to work with friends, family, and other groups in the creation of customised coffee blends. The Community Builder extends the range of products and services available to baristas in the delivery of their coffee. Charities and organisations are now able to use this powerful tool to develop and market their blends online using the Blendly platform.

Our first client, Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Scotland has already developed their blends and will be launching at the end of the month.  The whole process from concept to market, complete with own branded label, took 72 hours. The official launch will take place at the beginning of July when this blog will be updated to feature the blends referral links.

On working with Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Scotland, Mark Wilson commented “The Blendly team are extremely proud to be partnering with Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Scotland and as they start their journey as coffee distributors to their network of over 5,500 members. This truly demonstrates the entrepreneurial spirit that exists within their community which shows real potential to raise substantial funds over time.”

What does a Blendly Barista Distributor Community Builder do?
A Blendly Barista Distributor Community Builder allows you to manage and distribute fresh coffee blends direct to your own network. The Sales Manager Account gives you access to the same production and manufacturing facility. Blendly will be your support and puts you in charge by letting you manage your customers. The Sales Manager Account will allow you to blend a unique coffee and create any coffee type that suits the client requirements.
